« Staatsgevaarlijk Anarchisten »

« It’s kind of noteworthy that back at HAL2001 — three conferences ago, so 12 years ago — all of the volunteers wore “Staatsgevaarlijk Anarchisten” [anarchists enemies of the state] written on the back, which was a quote from the minister of the Communications at the time here in the Netherlands. He wanted to ban this conference from happening back then in 2001, on the basis of the people who attend this kind of conference — all these crazy hippies running around with laptops and trying to improve cryptography and what not… that they are a risk to the state, they’re anarchists, they’re crazy. And you know… Yes, we are anarchists, and yes, we are slightly crazy and yes, we are a risk to any state which is not going to follow democratic principles. »
